Felt apparel channeling ancient strength and beauty,
made from Navajo and Sonoma County wool.
Felt the Sun is my collection of hand-felted wool apparel, highlighting the beauty of natural wool colors from the legendary Navajo-Churro sheep and other breeds from Bay Area ranches. As clothing is one of the highest uses of a material, I specialize in vests and jackets for women and men. I also make an assortment of hats, purses, slippers, etc., and welcome custom orders -- size, color, design.
The mission of Felt the Sun is to use art and craft to honor the intertwining narratives of land, people, sheep, and other plants and animals. By making clothing, I seek to continue a good creation story that uplifts all the elements of life. Felt the Sun is based on the principle of gratitude, that the manner in which we provide for our basic well-being -- our food, shelter, clothing, and comfort -- should acknowledge, celebrate, and reciprocate for the well-being of our sources of material.
Needing an efficient yet non-destructive means of preparing large volumes of raw wool for felting and spinning, I invented the CycloCarder, the world’s first bicycle-powered drum carder. The CycloCarder creates a new MPG - miles (rode) per garment. Please see the CycloCarder page for details and to order a kit.
Felt the Sun apparel is embellished with materials in their natural form: buttons cut from deer antlers and black walnut shells, traditional hand-tanned leather, and yarn dyed with plants. Using wool, the original "high-performance fleece," and ancient felting techniques, each item is crafted into superior warmth, durability, and beauty.
Thanks for becoming the continuation of these stories.
